There are plenty of milestones being reached and maybe being the first at something shouldn’t be considered one of them, but someone has to set the bar. Think about sports records and the early days of competition when statistics typically meant the variety of players receiving the accolades for setting records were the same ones year after year. The same is true for what the Chevrolet Bolt has just accomplished. As we see more purely EV models on the market, there will be more competition, but until then, the Bolt will stand as the leader in many ways.

Not only did Chevrolet win the race to the market with the Tesla Model 3, but the Bolt is now the first EV model to earn the Top Safety Pick from the IIHS. This was accomplished under the new rules for 2018 that make this an impressive accomplishment for this model and one that is setting a milestone for other EV models to attempt to achieve. The video below shows the Bolt in its front overlap crash test and how it was able to protect those inside from injury and be the car that would be right to drive.

The new Chevy Bolt offers a 238-mile range, which is still more than what the Model 3 from Tesla will have when it arrived. This car is one that has garnered a ton of attention and is on its way to being one of the best-selling models on the market. As a safe car, the Bolt rated highly by the IIHS but missed out on the Top Safety Pick + because of its headlights. While these headlights provide plenty of light for the driver of the Bolt, they do have an excessive glare for oncoming drivers to deal with which resulted in a rating of poor overall for this item.

Even so, the Top Safety Pick score means the Chevy Bolt was able to score at least a good rating across the five crashworthiness tests. These include the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints. There also has to be a front crash prevention system in place that earns a superior or advanced rating. This system earned a superior rating and prevented collisions at both 12 mph and 25 mph on the test track, making this a car that you know you can trust to help you on the road.

With this new rating and the safety aboard the Chevy Bolt, this new EV model is setting records and cementing its place in the books of automotive lore. As a car that’s affordable to all while offering an easy drive and a charging system that works great to give you the driving distance you want, the new Chevy Bolt is a car that is what you’re looking for on the road and it can be the right choice for you, especially now that you know this car is rated highly for safety and will help protect you and your passengers.

Love the efficiency of an all-electric model but want the peace of mind that comes with a plug-in hybrid? Then opt for the Chevrolet Volt, which is the best of both worlds. Built like a sedan, the Volt gives optimum space along with ultimate fuel efficiency.
