Say it isn’t so; Toyota filed a patent for something extremely exciting. The European patent shows renderings of what could be a Toyota GR GT3 supercar.
If this car were to come to the market, it would be more exciting, while not quite as hotly anticipated, than the Supra. The filing shows this show car from many angles, giving the design elements we saw on the stage when Toyota mentioned a goal to commercialize motorsports cars. This idea seemed far-fetched at best when Toyota took the state at the Tokyo Auto Salon, but here we are.
Patent Filings Are Only One Step in the Process
If we were to look at the number of automotive patents filed that never amounted to much of anything, we wouldn’t have anything else to look at for the rest of our lives. There are that many patents filed around the world that never amount to an actual product. Many automakers file these patents to protect their intellectual property and the names desired for the cars in development. Toyota has let us down before with the GR Super Sport, but we can be a little hopeful this new racing machine will make its way to production.
Could this be the Right Mixed Bag
As mentioned, patent filing is no guarantee of product development, but this feels a little different. Toyota stated they want to sell cars similar to the GR GT3, which could open the doors for a high-end sports car to be part of the mix. This goal, plus the patent, might be enough to push this company forward, but we still need to be a little hesitant to trust that a new supercar from Toyota will make it to production and to dealerships around the world.
The Toyota GR Team Does Offer Some Fun
If we take some sage advice and choose to avoid “counting our chickens before they hatch,” we should look to the two models we already have from the Gazoo Racing team of Toyota. These two models are the GR 86 and GR Supra. Both of these cars offer excellent performance and fun driving manners with different applications of each. Let’s dive in and see what’s offered to make these cars more enjoyable out on the road or when you take them to the track.
What Does the GR 86 Bring?
If you’re looking for a small car with a lot of driving pleasure built into it, the Toyota GR 86 is the car for you. This small car came from the old Scion FR-S and has become one of the most fun and active cars in the two-seat sports coupe market. The next model year of this car should bring more performance features, including a firmer suspension, more exterior aerodynamics, and more power. This is a car that shows up with the fun you want without going overboard with price or build to make things too serious for you.
Push the Limits with the GR 86
Considering there wasn’t any mention of a patent filing in the United States for the Toyota GR GT3, we don’t know if a new Toyota supercar will become a reality. While waiting for the supercar, you can enjoy the pint-sized coupe that corners extremely well and delivers the ride you want without limits. Well, there are some limits. The GR 86 isn’t going to blow the doors off of any supercars, but it is a lot of fun to drive. Whether you take it to the track or stick to the winding roads you see, this amazing car can be everything you want.
How Much Power Does the Little Toyota Offer?
The GR 86 brings a tight and tiny 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that offers 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. This power is sent to the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission to bring you the desired drive. A set of paddle shifters is part of the features for the automatic, giving these drivers a sense of what it feels like to have a manual car. If you’re looking for a car with an energetic feeling, the Toyota GR 86 delivers.
What Will You Find in the GR Supra?
Do you want a Toyota that offers the driving manners from BMW? If so, the Toyota GR Supra is the sports car that gives you what you’re looking for This car can be had with either a respectable four-cylinder engine or a powerful turbocharged six-cylinder engine that makes this car hard to beat. You’ll love the solid build of the Supra and know that you’ve got a car the world waited for until Toyota finally chose to bring it back to reality to give us a great car to drive.
The Supra is a Thrilling Car for You
Regardless of the powertrain chosen, the Toyota GR Supra tears up the road. You can push this car hard through the turns, and all it will do is smile and ask for some more. The brakes, steering, and suspension all deliver the desired performance to make sure you can push through the drive and get to where you want to go with ease. Of course, the fun doesn’t stop unless you do, which means you might find it hard to park this car when there are so many cool roads waiting for you to drive on them.
Specialize Your Drive with the Supra
We don’t know if the Toyota GR GT3 will ever become a reality, but the A91-CF Edition of the Toyota GR Supra is a reality. This car is a specialized model that gives you exterior carbon-fiber trim on the front, sides, and rear of the car. You’ll also find a small carbon fiber spoiler fitted to the rear of this impressive car. A set of matte-black 19-inch alloy wheels give this special model a finished look.
It will be extremely exciting if the GR GT3 becomes a real thing, but if not, we have a pair of wonderful Gazoo Racing models to drive and enjoy. Which one is right for you?
