GM is making some significant changes to its lineup. From the massive GMC Yukon XL to the subcompact Chevrolet Spark, nearly all of GM’s cars, trucks, and SUVs will take on its new Vehicle Intelligence Platform. This connected electric vehicle architecture will be part of the majority of GM’s global lineup by 2023.
Over-The-Air Updates
GM’s new Vehicle Intelligence Platform is widely known for its ability to allow over-the-air updates on a host of vehicles. This system was first released in 2019 and is already part of a variety of vehicles, like the Buick Envision, Chevy Corvette, Suburban, and Tahoe, the GMC Yukon Xl and Yukon, and Cadillac CT4, CT5, and Escalade ESV.
This system, sometimes called Global B, allows the vehicle’s operating system, infotainment center, and other systems over the air. It is also the backbone of advanced driver-assist systems and cybersecurity measures.
Expanding Its Reach
The use and reception of GM’s Vehicle Intelligence Platform have been so well received that GM is adding it to an additional 29 vehicles for 2023. This move makes it so that nearly every GM vehicle model in North America will have this system.
As GM advances in creating and producing new electric vehicles, this platform will play a critical role across the board. This system is a significant portion of GM’s new wireless battery management system. It will also allow GM to send updates to various EVs to adjust the battery management setting, motor setup, or adjust other elements that will improve the vehicle’s performance.
Paving the Way To Advanced Features
GM’s Vehicle Intelligence Platform is also what allows new vehicles to use advanced features. Take, for example, GM’s Super Cruise. This semi-autonomous driving system utilizes features like adaptive cruise control to take control of the wheel on participating roads. This kind of advanced feature needs a powerful infrastructure in which to operate.
While some vehicles, like the Cadillac LYRIQ, Chevy Bolt EUV, and GMC Hummer, currently offer Super Cruise as an option, this feature will be coming to more vehicles in the future. GM is also working on an advanced version of this system called Ultra Cruise. That means vehicles like the GMC Yukon XL, Buick Encore, and Chevrolet Colorado could soon be available with this impressive self-driving mode.
GM’s president Mar Reuss believes that software like the Vehicle Intelligence System is critical both right now and in the future. This digital vehicle platform will pave the way to improved abilities, more powerful features, and a full range of innovative possibilities.
