Jeep, the automaker known for unrelenting power and the ability to traverse any terrain, made waves last November when it debuted its new Global Medium Engine in one of its most popular SUVs. This 2.0 L turbocharged four-cylinder engine is outfitted in the 2023 Jeep Compass and promises to deliver more power and better fuel economy than its predecessor.

This all-new engine is set to replace the 2.4 liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder Tigershark which previously delivered 177 horsepower and 172 lb-feet of torque. With the all-new GME 2.0 liter, drivers can look forward to a bump up in power at 200 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque.

This Jeep 2.0 Engine Delivers Better Fuel Economy

Jeep’s new 2.0 liter engine promises to deliver better performance and greater fuel economy. But does this actually stand up to reality?

The previous 2.4 liter Tigershark that was touted in the four-wheel drive of the 2022 Jeep Compass delivered an EPA estimate of 22 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway for a total combined 25 MPG. With the all-new 2023 Jeep Compass outfitted with four-wheel drive and the all-new 2.0 liter GME, drivers can enjoy slightly improved fuel efficiency.

EPA estimates bring the GME model to 24 MPG in the city and 32 MPG on the highway for a combined 27 MPG. That’s pretty impressive when you consider that the Compass is now only offered with AWD. Delivering better fuel efficiency than its predecessor has made the new Compass a rather easy choice for drivers wanting a tough,  fuel-efficient SUV.

Higher MSRP Might Cut Into Cost Savings

Despite the promise of better fuel efficiency, it’s important to take into consideration the MSRP of the all-new 2023 Jeep Compass. A price increase of a minimum of $650 makes it a bit more costly than the 2022 model. While the fuel costs for the all-new 2.0 liter engine are slightly lower, you will have to make up for it initially because of the overall purchasing cost. Still, over time, you can expect to save on fuel costs. And at the heart of it all, The GME family has delivered on its promise of fuel efficiency with even more power than the Tigershark.

Jeep’s History of Innovative Power Continues

It’s no secret that Jeep has a long, well-established history of innovation. The automaker’s incorporation of the 2.0 liter GME in the Compass is not the first incorporation of the GME family. The Global Medium Engine architecture is the brainchild of the powertrain division of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles group (FCA). The US version, FCA US division, first incorporated the GME family into the 2018 Jeep Wrangler. In 2019, these engines became available for the Jeep Cherokee as well.

Jeep GME: The Bottom Line

With the available ability to deliver consistent power and better fuel economy than its predecessor, it’s a no-brainer why Jeep has continued with the GME family and why drivers are welcoming the change with open arms in the all-new Jeep Compass.
