Regardless of the way you feel about Hugh Hefner and the Playboy empire he created and the lifestyle he lived, the fact is, he was part of the automotive industry in a small way. Every year since 1964 the woman who was chosen as the Playmate of the Year was awarded a car to have an exciting drive to enjoy on the road. Considering the several decades of this taking place there were an amazing variety of sports cars that were offered to these ladies to enjoy and drive. 1987 Chevrolet Corvette C4 – The Corvette was radically redesigned three years before this model year. This car showed up with a ton of power and the look that was sleek and stylish. If we see the C4 models today, they immediately garner a ton of attention from us for the drive. This car is one that still carries the respect it deserves and is one many of us would love to drive.
1973 Volvo P1800ES – This was the wagon version of the sporty two-seat sports car that Volvo offered at the time. This car showed up with a style that made it an instant classic and offered the added cargo capacity that would allow gear to be taken wherever desired. As a Volvo model, this car also offered the advanced safety and reliability desired on the road.
1966 Dodge Charger – As the first hear of the Charger nameplate this was the perfect car to gain the attention Dodge wanted. Giving this car to the Playmate of the Year would bring instant attention to the car that was powered by a 383-cubic-inch V8 engine that offered the seating inside to carry the family where you need to go. The rotating headlights were one of the best features of this car.
1967 Plymouth Barracuda – We can all mourn the loss of the Plymouth name form the marketplace, especially when we think of the Barracuda which was the version of the Charger that carried this brand name. This car also used a 383-cubic-inch V8 engine for the power needed to rocket this impressive model down the roads that were driven at the time.
1964.5 Ford Mustang – The first car awarded to the first Playmate of the Year was the Ford Mustang, which was certainly a fitting choice considering this car was one of the most respected and admired sports cars on the market. At the time this car was powered by the 289 V8 engine and only cost a price that came in at less than $3,000.
1965 Sunbeam Tiger – You certainly wouldn’t remember this car and it’s not something you’re expected to remember, but this little British sports car was powered by a Ford 260-ci V8 engine that was developed by Carroll Shelby. This is likely the most unusual member of this list as a car that was built by a company that didn’t build cars for very long at all.
1975 Porsche 911S – There are very few cars as alluring or as recognizable as the Porsche 911 and this one is the car that was fittingly awarded to the Playmate of the Year. This car was a lightweight sports car that could reach up to 146 mph with the power that poured out of the 2.7-liter flat six-cylinder engine that could pump out as much as 173 horsepower.
1968 AMC AMX – During the muscle car era this car was one that many of us wanted and admired. With only two seats and a 290-ci engine that gave you 225 horsepower this is a car that was a lot of fun to drive which certainly reflected the personality of the winner of this car. The owner of this car kept it and enjoyed it from 1968 until 2010, keeping it for many years in excellent condition.
1969 Shelby GT500 Fastback – This was an amazingly cool car and was one of the last cars that Carroll Shelby had his hands in because his contract ended in the summer of 1969. There were only 1,536 of these cars built and this one was powered by a 428-ci V8 engine that produced 355 horsepower to allow you to rocket to sixty mph in only six seconds.
1972 Detomaso Pantera – Here is another seriously rare car and the one that certainly tops the list of cool cars that were awarded to the Playmate of the Year winners. This car was powered by a tuned Ford 351-ci V8 engine that made 330 horsepower to be able to complete a quarter-mile in 14.5 seconds and the ability to reach sixty mph in only 6.5 seconds.
